Rainbow Musings
It's not a coincidence that the Rainbow flag became the international symbol of the Queer community...
We’ve heard it many times. People believe that the Queer community “stole” the symbol of God’s promise from them. The Rainbow. “That is God’s promise to us that he won’t flood the Earth again.” They cry.
"I will put my rainbow in the clouds to be a sign of my promise to the earth". Genesis 9:13
When I read the scripture verses (because there’s more than one) I found there was more to the story then what they spoke. There was more to understand.
Now, I’m not someone that “studies” the Bible. Even though I was forced to as a child. I do believe that the verses of the Bible (especially the original ones before King James put his two cent in) stand as teachings for humans to remember their connection to ancestral and spiritual wisdom. They hold perspective to a much bigger story that we may never fully understand.
**NOTE** When I use the term God, it’s a place holder for any word you’d use to reference a higher power or source.
But as humans evolved, so did their egos. These teachings became twisted into tools of oppression and control. Causing Bible verses like this one to become misunderstood or only viewed from one tunneled perspective. This teaching was not covenant between God and humans, but between God and the Earth and ALL her creatures. Which includes the humans.
Many (like the Christians Nationalist) view the Bible from a tunneled perspective. Believing that the Bible only applies to or is about them (straight men and women). They forget there is more to this world than them. There are the waters, the stones, the plants, the air, the fire, the creatures, the Earth, and the QUEERS.
I’ve been deeply reflecting on this rainbow promise. While I don’t have all the words that create a clear understanding of this promise, it has opened my mind to deeper questions and understandings.
These are the musings that have unfolded.
The more we become disconnected from the natural world; the more symbols we need to remember the natural world and true wisdom teachings. Those “woke” in this world are starting to see these symbols show up in many places and in different ways.
Which led me to ask myself. What if Queers are a living symbol of promise of God? A living rainbow?
A living symbol of love, hope, peace, community, inclusion, and protection given to humans. To help them break free from their overly constructed patriarchal culture.
No matter what has happened to the queer community, we continue to show up wearing love, smiles, a rainbow and a bit of glitter. Even in today’s uncertain and dark times. We show up knowing there is hope, connection, and safety to be found.
Queers that are safe “enough” to refuse to be anything but their authentic selves while inviting everyone around them to do the same.
Leading me to believe that it wasn’t a coincidence that the Rainbow flag became the international symbol of the Queer community.
The Pride Flag (for those that don’t know)
In 1978 Gilbert Baker was encouraged by Harvey Milk to create a symbol for the gay community. Gilbert saw flags as a powerful expression of pride.
“Our job as gay people was to come out, to be visible, to live in the truth, as I say, to get out of the lie. A flag really fit that mission, because that’s a way of proclaiming your visibility or saying, ‘This is who I am!’” – Gilbert Baker
He viewed a rainbow as a natural flag from the sky. Using each color of the rainbow to represent the values of the gay community.
Hot pink for sex
Red for life
Orange for healing
Yellow for sunlight
Green for nature
Turquoise for art
Indigo for harmony
Violet for spirit
Due to production issues a few colors were removed and Indigo switched to Blue, creating the flag that we have today. Spreading across the world, the flag was adopted by queer communities AND their allies.
While we see the flag as “I’m here, I’m queer, get used to it.” I don’t feel the queer community by any means is possessive of the Rainbow. It stands as a flag of inclusion regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, belief, status, and abilities.
A symbol of Hope, Love, Joy, Peace, and Community. A symbol that says, “you are safe here regardless of who you are”.
Queers Rule the In-Between Spaces
While the Bible seems to leave the queer community out of it (unless to villainize us) the spiritual communities welcome us with open arms and share teachings of our sacred nature.
Spiritual and many indigenous teachings speak of the queer community (Hayamoni from the spiritual teachers I’ve worked with) as Beings that come to this Earth to be teachers, leaders, and protectors.
We’re asked to come to the Earth during dark times, to be a bridge between the masculine and the feminine. The darker the times, the more Hayamoni that come. Ultimately, forcing conducted masculine and feminine to question their beliefs and conditionings. While some many double-down in their constructs, most open and expand.
Aiding the masculine to soften and the feminine to strengthen. Leading communities to become more interwoven and inclusive. Connected not only to each other but the Earth and her creatures as well.
Hayamoni’s come from the stars but on Earth we hold the energies of the in-between. Dusk, Dawn, Gateways, Bridges, Spring, Autumn etc. I believe a rainbow is an in-between space.
Meaning if Divine Feminine hold Earth energies and Divine Masculine hold Sky energies. Then Haymoni’s (Queer) would be the rainbow bridge between connecting the Earth to the Sky.
Rainbow promise… Rainbow Bridge… Rainbow Values….
No coincidence and not stolen.
Just Queers owning another piece of ourselves. Get used to it. *wink*
Happy Pride Rainbow Warriors!
These are small pieces to a bigger puzzle, but dots started connecting and a flicker of remembering started for me. I plan to reflect on and explore more topics like this going forward on Uncloaked Authenticity. I hope you’ll join me.
What if Queers are a living symbol of promise of God? A living rainbow? A living promise in dark times?
I’ve asked these questions to many of my queer friends, but I’m curious to know what this brought up for you.
I truly believe that open conversations deepen our understandings so please share your thoughts. Just please be respectful to each other.
If you want to share some joy with me… a cup of tea always brings a smile to my face. - thank you!
